Belleville Began by Cutting Trees. Now It Is About Keeping Them.

In 1845 John Frederick acquired land along the Sugar River and started building a dam and a sawmill, later adding a grist mill; by 1850 he and John Mitchell had platted the village and named it for his hometown of Belleville, Ontario. The sawmill is long gone, but the river still runs through the middle of town, and it shapes most of the tree service in Belleville that we do. Yards near the water and on low ground along the river need a different plan than the higher blocks.

A village in two counties

Belleville straddles the Dane and Green county line. At the 2020 census, 1,909 of its 2,491 residents lived on the Dane County side and 582 on the Green County side. It does not change how a tree is pruned, but it can matter for things like county services, so if you call us, let us know which side you are on. We work on both.

Trees along the river

The village covers 1.81 square miles, and 0.22 of that is water. Trees on riverbanks and near standing water deal with wet soil much of the year, which keeps roots shallow, and they often lean out over the water toward the light. Erosion along a bank can slowly undercut a tree that looked solid for years. Before removing a riverbank tree, we look at whether it is holding the bank together; sometimes reducing the crown and leaving the trunk and roots is the better answer. When a tree does have to come out, we lower it in pieces so nothing lands in the river.

Using Belleville's brush pickup

The village collects brush on the first and third Mondays of each month from April through November, weather permitting, and it is worth knowing the details if you prune your own shrubs:

  • Set brush out by 6:00 a.m. on collection Monday, but no earlier than a week before
  • Branches up to 6 inches in diameter only
  • No root balls, stumps, leaves, grass, garden plants or anything with soil in it
  • Crews spend about 15 minutes per location; whatever is not chipped in that time waits for the next date
  • If you miss your date, or after November, take brush to the Brush and Compost Drop-Off Site at 531 E. Pearl Street

That 15-minute rule means a full tree removal will not fit the village program. On our jobs, the crew chips and hauls the brush and you do not have to plan around the calendar.

What we see in a small village

When a yard has one large shade tree that defines the property, losing it is a big change, so we spend time on whether it can be kept: removing deadwood, thinning to reduce wind load, and checking for decay. When a tree is truly failing, we say so and explain why. Ash should be checked for emerald ash borer, which has been confirmed in most Wisconsin counties.

After a removal

Stump grinding takes the stump below grade so you can replant or reseed. Because the village brush program does not take stumps, grinding in place is usually the simplest option. If you would like to replant, we can talk through species that tolerate wet soil for spots near the river.

Belleville Questions

Will Belleville's brush crew take the branches from a tree removal?

Probably not all of them. Crews spend about 15 minutes per location and take only branches up to 6 inches. For removals we chip and haul the brush ourselves.

Can you remove a tree leaning over the Sugar River?

Yes. We section it and lower the pieces to land so nothing falls in the water. We also look at whether the roots are holding the bank, and if so we may suggest a reduction instead.

Do you work on the Green County side of Belleville?

Yes. We serve the whole village on both sides of the county line, plus nearby rural properties.
