Verona Has Had More Than Its Share of Wind
If you have lived in Verona for a while, you probably remember at least one of the storms. EF1 tornadoes touched the city on July 22, 2010 and June 9, 2011. On June 16, 2014 an EF3 tornado damaged Country View Elementary and the neighborhoods around it; no one was hurt. On July 29, 2021 an EF1 and a high-end EF0 came through. A lot of our tree service in Verona is about that history: removing trees that were damaged and never fully recovered, and pruning healthy ones so they shed less weight and catch less wind when the next line of storms arrives.
May 2024: a reminder without a tornado
Not every damaging storm is a tornado. On the night of May 21, 2024, strong winds brought down trees, limbs and branches all over the city. Trees landed on cars near County Road G and on a power line behind South Franklin Street, and some residents in the South Franklin to South Jefferson area were without power into May 23 while Alliant Energy repaired the line. The interim public works director called it one of the city's largest recent cleanup efforts, and the city administrator warned it would take weeks, not days. Public works urged residents to use extreme caution with damaged trees and to bring in a tree professional.
What storm-ready pruning means
Wind damage concentrates in predictable places. Before storm season we look for:
- Codominant stems with a seam of included bark between them, which split under load
- Long, heavy limbs extended over the roof or driveway with little taper
- Dead wood in the upper crown, which breaks first and falls farthest
- Trees that were partly damaged in an earlier storm and have weak regrowth around old wounds
- Trees with root damage from construction, which can blow over even when the crown looks fine
Pruning addresses most of those. The aim is not to strip the tree but to reduce the sail and the lever arm, following ANSI A300 pruning practices so the cuts close properly.
Where the wood goes
At the start of 2025 the city opened a brush and yard waste drop-off at 2159 Range Trail. It is open to City of Verona residents only, seven days a week, takes limbs and logs up to 8 inches in diameter and 12 feet long, and is not for commercial contractors. The old site at 410 Investment Court no longer takes brush. That means wood from our jobs leaves with our crew; you do not have to haul it anywhere.
The landscape around town
The Sugar River valley, Badger Mill Creek and a section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail all run through Verona. Yards that back onto the creek or trail corridors can be wet and hard to reach, which changes how a tree should be taken down, where wood can be lowered and where equipment can drive without rutting the lawn.
Owners who are here for the long run
Census QuickFacts reports that 67.4% of Verona homes are owner-occupied and 87.6% of residents lived in the same home a year earlier. If you plan to stay, it is worth deciding about a borderline tree on a calm day rather than in the middle of a cleanup.

Verona Questions
A tree fell on a power line behind my Verona house. What should I do first?
Stay well away from it and report it to the electric utility right away. Do not try to move limbs touching a line. Once the utility has made the line safe, we can remove the tree and clean up.
Can I take wood from a tree job to the Range Trail site myself?
If you are a City of Verona resident hauling your own brush, yes, within the size limits. The site is not for commercial contractors, so wood we cut leaves with us.
Our big maple lost a limb in 2021 and grew back bushy. Is that a problem?
It can be. Shoots that sprout around a large wound are often weakly attached and get heavy over a few years. We can thin and reduce them so they do not break in the next storm.
Is it better to remove a tree before storm season or wait?
If a tree has a known defect such as a cracked union, decay in the trunk or a root plate that has lifted, deal with it before spring storms. Healthy trees usually just need pruning.
