Planning Tree Work Around the Wisconsin Calendar
Oregon started as Rome Corners, where Bartley Runey settled in 1841 at the crossing of the Old Lead Road and the Madison to Janesville mail route. Today it is a village of about 12,000 people, and it is one of the most settled places in the county: Census QuickFacts reports that 94.8% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier and 72.4% of homes are owner-occupied. When people stay put, tree service in Oregon is less about one-off emergencies and more about a plan. Here is how we think about the year.
Late fall through winter: the main pruning season
With the leaves off, branch structure is easy to see, the ground is firm enough to protect the lawn, and insects and disease are inactive. This is the window for:
- Pruning oaks, which the Wisconsin DNR says should be avoided from April through July because of oak wilt
- Structural pruning on young trees in newer neighborhoods
- Removing dead ash and other dead trees before snow and ice load them
- Large removals where heavy equipment would rut a soft lawn in spring
Early spring: check what the winter did
Heavy snow and freezing rain snap limbs, and the damage is often hanging in the crown rather than on the ground. Walk the yard in March and look up. Hangers over a driveway, play area or roof should come down before leaves hide them and before spring storms knock them loose.
Late spring and summer: storm season
This is thunderstorm season; the damaging Madison-area storms of June 13, 2022 and May 21, 2024 both came in this stretch. It is also the time to leave oaks alone unless there is an emergency; DNR guidance is that if an oak must be cut or is wounded from April through July, the wound should get a light coat of paint or sealer right away. For other species, summer is fine for light pruning and for spotting trees that leaf out thin or late, which is often the first visible sign of root trouble or ash borer.
Early fall: decide before winter
Late August through October is a good time for an assessment. You can see which trees are healthy in full leaf, and there is still time to schedule removals for the dormant season.
Why growth matters here
Oregon's population rose 66.3% from 1990 to 2000, then another 22.9% and 21.1% in the next two decades, reaching 11,179 in 2020. Each wave of building added yards with newly planted trees, and many of them are now at the age where early structural problems show up. The village covers 4.49 square miles of land and sits at about 1,053 feet, a little higher than Madison, on gently rolling ground south of the city.
Getting the wood out
For brush you cut yourself, the Dane County Landfill on US Highway 12 accepts brush for a fee. Wood from our work leaves with the crew. Stumps can be ground to below grade so you can reseed or replant in the same spot.

Oregon Questions
What is the best month to prune trees in Oregon, WI?
For most shade trees, and especially oaks, late fall through late winter. Dormant pruning avoids the oak wilt season and makes the structure easier to see. Light pruning on non-oaks can be done most of the year.
Can you split a big job across two seasons?
Yes. A common approach is to remove hazards and dead trees right away and schedule pruning for the next dormant season. The written estimate lists each phase and its price.
We found a limb hanging in our tree after a winter storm. Is it urgent?
If it is over a walkway, driveway, roof or play area, treat it as urgent. Hanging limbs can drop without warning, especially in wind. Keep people out from under it and call (608) 820-8710.
