What to Do When a Tree Comes Down
Emergency storm tree service starts before anyone picks up a saw. When a tree or a big limb comes down on your house, your car or your driveway, the first questions are whether anyone is hurt, whether wires are involved and whether the structure is still safe to be in. In Madison, the storms that cause this kind of damage usually come in summer: lines of thunderstorms with straight-line winds that break limbs and uproot trees with weak roots, often across many neighborhoods at once. Winter snow and the occasional ice coating cause a different kind of breakage, mostly at weak forks and on long limbs.
The first few minutes
Stay out from under anything hanging. Treat every downed wire as live, keep people and pets away, and call MGE right away; the city lists 608-252-1111 for MG&E power lines, and MGE handles downed lines around the clock. If a public tree is blocking the whole road or has fallen onto a house, Madison's guidance is to call 911 or Dane County Dispatch at 608-255-2345 rather than sending an email. For a private tree on your house, call your insurer and then call us at (608) 820-8710; you can leave details at any hour, and we sort calls by danger.
How we sort storm work
After a widespread storm, calls come in faster than any crew can get to them. We go in order of risk: a tree resting on a roof or through a ceiling, a tree blocking the only way out of a house, limbs hanging over a door, sidewalk or driveway, then trees that are down in the yard but not touching anything. A tree leaning on a house is often holding tension in its trunk and limbs, and cutting the wrong piece first can drop it further onto the roof. These jobs are done slowly, with ropes and sometimes a crane, which can be the safest way to lift a heavy trunk off a structure without more damage.
Photos and insurance
Before any cleanup, take photos of the tree, where it landed and the damage from several angles. Your homeowner's policy may cover removal of a tree that falls on a covered structure; the details vary by policy, so ask your insurer. Our written quote lists the work on the tree separately from the cleanup of the yard so the adjuster can see what each part costs.
Oaks damaged in season
A split or hanging oak limb in July still falls under Madison's rule requiring a permit for any oak work between April 1 and October 15. The city says these permits are issued on an emergency basis, so a call to Urban Forestry at 608-266-4816 comes early in the process. Fresh breaks on oaks attract the beetles that carry oak wilt, so clean pruning cuts and sealing them soon after the work matters more than usual.
Brush after a big storm
After large storms, Madison's Streets Division sometimes runs extra brush pickups, as it did after the wind storm of December 15, 2021. The usual rules still apply: pieces between 18 inches and 8 feet long, no thicker than 8 inches, cut ends facing one way, and piles at least four feet from terrace trees, signs, poles and hydrants. Trunks and large limbs need another plan; we can cut, chip and haul whatever the city will not take.
The Work Involved
Storm work covers making the site safe, getting the tree off what it hit and cleaning up.
Trees on houses and garages
Trunks and limbs lifted or lowered off roofs in controlled pieces so the structure is not damaged further.
Hanging and broken limbs
Hangers caught high in the canopy brought down safely before they fall on their own.
Uprooted and leaning trees
Trees with lifted root plates assessed and removed before the next wind finishes the job.
Driveway and yard clearing
Downed trees cut, chipped and hauled so cars, doors and walkways are usable again.
Storm damage pruning
Torn and split branches cut back to clean wood so trees that can be saved heal properly.

Typical Emergency Tree Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Emergency removal, same or next day (HomeGuide) | about 2 to 3 times the standard rate |
| Emergency removal, complex cases (HomeAdvisor) | up to $5,000 |
| Fallen tree cleanup (HomeAdvisor) | $75 to $150, plus hauling |
| Crane on large trees (HomeAdvisor) | $250 to $600 per day; complex jobs $6,000 to $7,000 |
| Standard removal, 30 to 60 ft (HomeGuide) | $500 to $1,500 |
Ranges from HomeGuide's national tree removal guide (2026) and HomeAdvisor's tree removal cost guide (2025). A tree on a structure, wires, cranes and after-hours work raise the price a great deal. Your written estimate is the price.
How It Works
1. Make the site safe
Call 911 or MGE first if anyone is hurt or a wire is involved, and keep everyone clear.
2. Call and describe
Tell us what fell, what it hit and whether anyone can get in and out. Photos help us plan.
3. Remove the hazard
The tree comes off the structure or out of the way in controlled pieces, in order of danger.
4. Clean up and review
Wood and brush handled as agreed, and the remaining trees checked for cracks the storm left behind.

Why Choose Us for Emergency Storm Tree Service
Danger decides the order
Trees on houses and blocked exits are handled before trees that are only down in the yard.
Quote built for your adjuster
Tree work and cleanup are listed separately so your insurer can see each part.
Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions
A tree fell on my house. What should I do first?
Get everyone out of the damaged part of the house and away from any wires. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or a wire is down, and call MGE about any line. Then photograph the damage, call your insurer and call us; do not try to cut a tree that is resting on the roof yourself.
Does homeowner's insurance pay for storm tree removal?
Often, when the tree falls on a covered structure such as the house or garage, subject to your policy's limits and deductible. Trees that fall in the yard without hitting anything are covered less often. Ask your insurer, and keep the photos and our written quote for the claim.
Who handles a city tree that fell in the storm?
The city. If a terrace tree blocks the road or lands on a house, Madison says to call 911 or Dane County Dispatch at 608-255-2345. For less urgent damage to a city tree, report it to Urban Forestry.
Can a tree company remove a tree that is on a power line?
Not while the line is energized. MGE has to make the line safe first; call the utility and stay well back. Once the line is de-energized or cleared, we remove the rest of the tree and clean up.
Will my other trees be safe after the storm?
Not always. Storms leave cracked limbs, hangers caught in the canopy and trees with loosened roots that fail in the next wind. After the urgent work is done, we walk the rest of the trees on the lot and tell you what we see.
