Lake, Marsh Edge and Farmland in One Town

The Town of Westport covers about 27.2 square miles, and 5.0 of them, roughly 18%, are water. It wraps around the Village of Waunakee, which was carved out of the town in 1893, and it includes part of Lake Mendota's north shore that used to belong to the Town of Madison. Governor Nelson State Park, 422 acres of restored prairie and savanna with effigy mounds, sits inside the town on the lake. Tree service in Westport moves between those settings: lakefront lots with big trees over the water, homes near the park and open land, and rural parcels on both sides of Waunakee.

Lakefront work on the north shore

North-shore lots face south across Lake Mendota, which means sun and wind off the open water. Trees on a shoreline usually grow heavier toward the lake, and the soil near the water can stay wet. Removing or reducing those trees is mostly a rigging problem. We take the tree down in sections, lowering each piece on a rope to a landing zone on the lawn, so nothing goes into the water or onto a pier, boat lift or retaining wall. When the goal is a better lake view rather than removal, selective thinning and raising the lower limbs often opens the view while keeping the shade and the shoreline roots.

Near the savanna

Savanna, like the restored acres in the state park, is open grassland dotted with large, spreading trees. Where a Westport yard has big open-grown oaks, those trees are worth special care. Prune them only in the dormant season; the Wisconsin DNR warns that wounds made from April through July can let sap beetles carry oak wilt into the tree, and red and black oaks can die within weeks. Oak wilt can also move between neighboring oaks through connected roots.

Rural parcels

On the farm side of the town, requests look different:

  • Taking down dead ash and storm-broken trees along fence rows
  • Clearing branches over field drives and long gravel driveways
  • Removing trees too close to outbuildings and grain bins
  • Grinding stumps so ground can be mowed or planted
  • Leaving firewood lengths stacked near the house

Town brush collection

The town runs scheduled brush collection weeks, such as the week of September 21, 2026, with brush roadside by 6:00 a.m. on the Monday of collection. Crews do not come back to a street until its next scheduled date. That schedule is set up for homeowner pruning. For tree removals and larger jobs, our crew chips and hauls the brush as part of the work.

A town that may become a village

In September 2024 the town board voted to support incorporating Westport as a village, and a petition went to Wisconsin's Incorporation Review Board in July 2025. If that happens, local ordinances and services could change, so it is worth checking with the town before relying on old rules for things like brush or right-of-way trees. The town's name comes from Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, home to many early settlers.

Westport Questions

Can you open up my lake view in Westport without removing trees?

Often, yes. Thinning the crown and raising lower limbs can open views while keeping the tree, its shade and the roots that hold the shoreline. We will mark exactly which limbs come out before we start.

Will the town pick up brush after you remove a tree?

Town brush weeks are set up for homeowner pruning, and crews do not make return trips. On our jobs the brush is chipped and hauled as part of the quote.

Is it safe to prune my oaks in the summer?

It is risky. The DNR's high-risk window for oak wilt is April through July. Unless a limb is broken and dangerous, wait for the dormant season.
