Why Oaks Get Their Own Rules Here
Oak tree pruning in Madison follows a calendar that most other trees do not. Big oaks shade yards from the west side to the lakeshore neighborhoods, and they are often the oldest living thing on the lot. They are also vulnerable to oak wilt, a fungal disease that the Wisconsin DNR has found in nearly every county in the state. Because a fresh pruning cut is one of the main ways the disease gets into a healthy oak, the city requires a permit for any work on an oak between April 1 and October 15, on public and private property alike. Most of the time, the right answer is to schedule the work for the months outside that window.
How oak wilt spreads
The DNR explains two routes. Sap-feeding beetles carry spores from infected trees to fresh wounds, including pruning cuts, storm breaks and recently cut stumps. Once a tree is infected, the fungus moves underground into neighboring oaks through grafted roots, which is why oak wilt tends to kill trees in expanding groups. UW-Madison's Plant Disease Diagnostics Clinic notes that sap beetles can reach a wound within about ten minutes of the cut, so the timing of the cut, not just its quality, decides the risk.
Red oaks and white oaks
Oaks with pointed leaf lobes, like northern red, pin and black oak, belong to the red oak group, and they are hit hardest: the DNR says a red oak usually dies within about a month once it starts to wilt. Oaks with rounded lobes, like white and bur oak, are in the white oak group. Bur and swamp white oaks show moderate tolerance and may live for years with the disease, and other white oaks may survive it. Red oaks matter most for timing, but in Madison the permit applies to every oak.
Dormant-season pruning
From mid-October through March, beetles are inactive and oak pruning carries little oak wilt risk. That is when we do routine oak work: removing dead branches, lifting limbs off a roof, thinning a heavy crown or shortening a limb stretched toward the house. Mature oaks do not tolerate heavy pruning well, so we take only what is needed and favor small cuts back to healthy side branches. Winter also makes it easier to see the structure, and frozen ground protects the root zone from equipment.
When an oak cannot wait
A cracked leader after a July storm or a limb hanging over a doorway cannot sit until November. In those cases we contact Urban Forestry for the permit; the city says these permits are issued on an emergency basis, and they require an inspection. The DNR advises sealing an oak wound right after the cut during the high-risk period, ideally within 15 minutes, and notes that wounds are no longer susceptible after about 72 hours. We carry wound sealer for that reason and use it on every in-season oak cut.
Protecting the roots
Much oak decline in the city has nothing to do with disease. Trenching, new driveways, additions and soil piled over the roots kill oaks slowly over several years. For street trees near construction, Madison's 2026 tree protection rules call for one foot of protected zone for every inch of trunk diameter, a useful rule of thumb for yard oaks too. If you are planning work near a big oak, talk to us before the excavator arrives. The city also responded to a spongy moth outbreak in 2023-24; oaks are a favorite of the caterpillars, and a tree that was defoliated benefits from water and mulch more than from pruning.
What We Handle
Oak work is planned around the tree's age, the disease calendar and what is underneath.
Dormant-season deadwood removal
Dead and dying branches removed from mature oaks between mid-October and March.
Clearance and reduction cuts
Limbs lifted or shortened off roofs, driveways and garages with small cuts to lateral branches.
In-season permitted work
Hazardous oak limbs handled between April 1 and October 15 with a city permit and immediate wound sealing.

Typical Oak Pruning Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Oak tree trimming (HomeGuide, national) | $450 to $1,500 |
| Tree 30 to 60 ft (HomeGuide, national) | $600 to $1,200 |
| Tree over 60 ft (HomeGuide, national) | $1,000 to $2,500+ |
| Pruning, Madison average (Homeyou, 2026) | $375 to $525 |
| City of Madison oak work permit | free |
Ranges from HomeGuide's national tree trimming guide (2026) and Homeyou's Madison guide (2026); the permit cost is from the City of Madison. Large spreading oaks, lifts and in-season work raise the price. Your written estimate is the price.
How We Do It
1. Identify and assess
We confirm the oak species, look for dead wood, cracks and wilt symptoms, and check what lies under the crown.
2. Set the date
Routine work goes on the dormant-season schedule; urgent work starts with a call to Urban Forestry.
3. Prune
Small, clean cuts to branch collars and laterals, with sealer on any cut made in season.
4. Wood and cleanup
Brush chipped and wood handled as agreed, kept local and covered if wilt is suspected.

Why Choose Us for Oak Tree Pruning
Calendar first
We will tell you when oak work should wait, even if that means a later job for us.
Light hands on old trees
Mature oaks get only the cuts they need, made small and placed where the tree can close them.
Oak Tree Pruning Questions
When can I prune my oak tree in Madison?
Without a permit, from October 16 through March 31. Madison requires a permit from Urban Forestry for any oak work between April 1 and October 15, including private oaks. UW-Madison's plant disease clinic also advises pruning oaks only in the dormant season.
How do I know if my oak has oak wilt?
Leaves wilt and drop from the upper canopy first, often while still partly green, usually from June through September. In red oaks the whole tree can die within about a month. Other problems look similar, so the DNR recommends lab confirmation; UW-Madison's Plant Disease Diagnostics Clinic (608-262-2863) tests samples.
Does the city oak permit cost anything?
No. The permit is free. It requires contacting Urban Forestry and an inspection, and the city asks for a bid or consultation from a private arborist as part of the process, so allow some lead time unless it is an emergency.
Should oak pruning cuts be painted?
Normally, wound paint is not recommended on trees. Oaks during the April-to-July high-risk period are the exception: the DNR advises a light coat of sealer right after the cut, ideally within 15 minutes, because that is when beetles carrying oak wilt spores are attracted to wounds.
Can I keep firewood from an oak that had oak wilt?
Keep it on your property or nearby, never move it far. The DNR advises covering wood from infected trees with 4 mil plastic until the bark loosens, which keeps the beetles from carrying spores out of it.
