Wet Soils, Gentle Hills and a City That Prunes Its Own Street Trees

Sun Prairie got its name in June 1837, when a surveying party heading from Milwaukee came out of days of rain and carved the words into a tree at the edge of the prairie. Trees are still central to the place. The city has held Tree City USA status for more than 25 years, its Forestry Division cares for more than 10,000 public trees, and spring and fall plantings typically add 200 to 300 more each year. Our tree service in Sun Prairie covers what the city does not: the trees on your side of the property line.

The ground under Sun Prairie

Most of the city sits in a drumlin and marsh landscape, with small glacial hills, shallow glacial deposits and part of the Yahara River Valley. Some of that ground has hydric soils, the kind that formed under wet conditions, and they contribute to occasional flooding. The city has seen it: heavy overnight rain on April 11, 2008 overwhelmed storm drains and flooded basements, and the June 2008 Midwest floods hit Sun Prairie hard. For trees, wet soil means shallower roots and weaker anchoring. A tall spruce or maple in a low corner of a lot can stand for decades and then tip in one saturated, windy night. When we assess a tree here, we look at where it sits on the slope as much as at the canopy.

What the city handles, and what it leaves to you

Sun Prairie's Forestry Division does all pruning of trees in the public right-of-way. The municipal code (section 12.40.070) prohibits pruning those trees without the City Forester's written consent. Trees on private property are the owner's business unless the city declares one a public nuisance under section 12.40.020. In practical terms:

  • A terrace tree with a broken limb: call the City Forester at 608-825-0887
  • A backyard tree with a broken limb: that one is yours to deal with, and we can help
  • A private tree that hangs over the street or sidewalk: we can raise or prune it from your side, keeping off the public tree
  • An ash on your lot: the city runs its own EAB program for public trees, but private ash are your call to treat or remove

Newer neighborhoods, older farm trees

Sun Prairie's population grew 22.5% between 2010 and 2020, to 35,967, and several traditional neighborhood developments went up on former farmland. Building on farmland can leave a newer house next to an older windbreak or a big yard tree that was there long before the street was laid out. Those old trees are worth keeping where they are healthy, and they also need a different kind of pruning than the young street trees around them. Oak work, in particular, belongs in the dormant season. The Wisconsin DNR advises against pruning oaks from April through July because of oak wilt.

People here stay put

Census QuickFacts shows 85.5% of Sun Prairie residents lived in the same house a year earlier, and about 60.8% of homes are owner-occupied. Long ownership means you live with the results of tree decisions for years, which is why we write out exactly which limbs come off and why before any work starts.

Sun Prairie Questions

Can I hire someone to trim the city tree in front of my Sun Prairie house?

Not without written permission from the City Forester. The Forestry Division handles all right-of-way pruning, so start with a call to the city. We can work on any private trees nearby at the same visit.

My yard stays soggy every spring. Does that affect my trees?

Yes. Wet soils keep roots shallow and make trees easier to topple when the ground is saturated and the wind picks up. We look at lean, root plate movement and soil heaving around the trunk, and we may suggest reducing weight on a tree rather than removing it.

Will the city take a private tree that is dying?

Generally no. The Forestry Division only gets involved with private trees declared a public nuisance under the municipal code. Otherwise removal is up to the owner.
