Grinding Out Stumps the Right Way
Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed wheel that chews a stump into chips, starting at the top and working down below the soil line. It is faster and far less destructive than digging a stump out, and it leaves the deep roots to rot in place. For most Madison yards it is the last step after a removal: the tree is gone, and the stump is in the way of a mower, a new garden bed, a patio or a replacement tree. Some homeowners grind the same day as the removal; others call us years later about a stump an earlier owner left behind.
Utility marking comes first
Grinding goes into the ground, so underground lines have to be located first. In Wisconsin that means a request to Diggers Hotline, and MGE asks for at least three business days of notice before digging projects. Gas service lines, buried electric to a garage, invisible dog fences and irrigation lines are all common in Madison yards. Marks show where a line runs but not how deep it is, so we grind carefully near any flag. Private lines such as a cable to a backyard shed are not located by the hotline, so tell us about any you know of.
How deep and how wide
How far down we grind depends on what comes next. For grass seed, a few inches below grade is usually enough. For a new tree, a patio base or a fence post, we go deeper and wider so the new work is not sitting on old wood. Surface roots that run out from the stump and lift the lawn can be ground along their length too, which costs more but leaves a smoother yard. We agree on depth in the quote so there is no surprise.
Fresh oak stumps in spring
The Wisconsin DNR notes that the beetles that spread oak wilt are drawn to fresh wounds and recently cut oak stumps. If an oak comes down during the April-to-July high-risk period, the stump is part of the risk. Grinding it soon after the cut, or treating the cut surface right away, removes much of that attraction. Because oak roots graft with neighbors, an oak that died of oak wilt may also call for breaking those root connections before nearby oaks are cut, which is a separate decision we talk through with you.
Chips and the hole left behind
A ground stump leaves a mound of chips mixed with soil, often more than people expect. You can keep it to fill the hole and settle over a season, spread it as mulch around shrubs, or have us haul it off and backfill with topsoil. Chips from a diseased tree should be kept away from healthy trees of the same species. Grass seed does poorly in pure chips, so if you want lawn there, plan on removing most of the chips and adding soil.
Terrace stumps
If a city tree was removed from the terrace in front of your house, the stump is the city's job. Madison's Urban Forestry crews remove terrace stumps with their own equipment after utility marking, and the city notes that stumps from late-fall removals may wait until spring. We grind only stumps on private property.
What This Covers
Stump work covers the stump, the roots you can see and what happens to the chips.
Single stump grinding
One stump ground below grade to a depth agreed for lawn, beds or replanting.
Multiple stumps
Several stumps on one visit, which costs much less per stump than separate trips.
Surface root grinding
Roots that run across the lawn ground down along their length so the yard can be mowed flat.
Chip removal and backfill
Chips hauled away and the hole filled with topsoil ready for seed or sod.

How It Works
1. Measure and look
We measure each stump, check access through gates and note roots, beds and structures nearby.
2. Locate utilities
A Diggers Hotline request is placed and we wait for marks before any grinding.
3. Grind
The stump and agreed surface roots are ground below grade to the depth set in the quote.
4. Chips and finish
Chips left in the hole, spread as mulch or hauled away, with topsoil added if you chose it.

Depth agreed in writing
The quote says how deep and how wide each stump will be ground, based on your plans for the spot.
Marks before grinding
Underground utilities are located before the grinder touches the ground.
Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost in Madison?
HomeGuide's 2026 national guide puts stump grinding at about $2 to $6 per inch of diameter, with a first stump typically $120 to $400 and each additional stump $30 to $60. Hardwood stumps like oak and maple, roots that spread across the lawn, and tight access all push the price up. We price each stump in writing.
Will the roots keep growing after grinding?
Most trees, including oaks and maples, do not regrow from roots once the stump is ground below grade, and the roots slowly decay. Some species sprout from roots, so you may see a few shoots for a season; mowing or clipping them usually ends it. Surface roots can be ground if they are in the way.
Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?
Yes, but grind deeper and wider, remove most of the chips and replace them with soil, because chips tie up nitrogen as they break down. Many people plant a few feet to the side of the old stump instead, which is easier for the new tree's roots.
Do I need to call Diggers Hotline for stump grinding?
Yes. Grinding goes below the surface, and buried gas, electric and communication lines are common in Madison yards. A request goes to Diggers Hotline before the work, and MGE asks for at least three business days of notice. We handle the request as part of the job.
Who removes the stump on my terrace?
The city. Terrace trees belong to Madison, and Urban Forestry removes their stumps after locating utilities. Timing varies with the season and crew workload, and late-fall removals can wait until spring.
