A City That Is Half Suburb, Half Countryside

Fitchburg covers about 35 square miles, and its tree service needs change as you drive south. Near the Madison line the city is subdivisions, apartments and commercial strips, where most trees were planted when the houses went up. Farther south it turns to protected farmland, woodlots and fence lines. A Fitchburg homeowner might need a young maple pruned so it grows a sound structure, or a row of old fence-line trees cleared off five acres. We price those as the different jobs they are.

Why so many Fitchburg yards have young trees

Fitchburg's population grew 17.2% between 2010 and 2020, to 29,609, and the state estimated 37,220 residents as of January 1, 2026. Much of that growth is newer housing, and newer housing means trees that are 10 to 30 years old. Those are the years when structural pruning pays off most. Removing a competing leader or a crossing limb while it is two inches thick costs far less than dealing with a split trunk later, and it leaves a much smaller wound for the tree to close.

The rural side

South of the developed area, the work looks more like land management. Typical requests include:

  • Clearing dead ash and box elder out of windbreaks and fence rows
  • Removing trees that lean over a long gravel driveway or outbuilding
  • Cutting back limbs over a field edge so equipment can pass
  • Taking down storm-damaged trees on acreage where the brush has to be processed on site
  • Grinding stumps left from older clearing so the ground can be mowed again

Getting brush to the curb the way Fitchburg wants it

The city publishes set weeks for brush and yard waste through its hauler, Pellitteri, with materials out by 6:30 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week. The rules are specific: limbs under 5 feet long and under 6 inches in diameter, side branches trimmed off trunks in the 4 to 6 inch range, and piles no more than 3 feet high. Brush on private property or on a private street is only picked up after the owner signs an indemnification agreement and coordinates with the city and hauler. For a tree job of any real size, it is simpler to have the crew chip everything and take it away, which is how we quote it unless you ask otherwise.

A city formed by annexation fights

Fitchburg incorporated as a city on April 26, 1983, after a dispute with Madison over annexation that reached the Wisconsin Supreme Court. On October 31, 2022, the remaining pieces of the Town of Madison were split between Madison and Fitchburg. If you live in one of those former town areas, your street services and rules now come from the city, so it is worth checking the current brush calendar rather than relying on what the town used to do.

Trails through town

The Badger State Trail, Cannonball Trail and Ice Age Trail all pass through Fitchburg. Homes that back onto those corridors often have trees whose limbs hang over the path, and dropping wood toward a public trail calls for extra rigging and spotters. We plan those cuts so nothing lands outside your lot.

Fitchburg Questions

Where can I take yard waste in Fitchburg outside of pickup weeks?

The city lists its Recycling Drop Off Site at 2373 S. Fish Hatchery Road for yard waste. For questions about a missed brush pickup, Pellitteri handles calls at 608-257-4285.

We have a few acres in southern Fitchburg. Do you clear whole tree lines?

Yes. Fence-row and windbreak clearing is common on the rural side of the city. We can remove selected trees and leave the healthy ones, and grind stumps so you can mow through afterward.

Our subdivision trees are only 15 years old. Do they need pruning?

Usually that is the best time. Structural pruning on young trees removes competing leaders and weak branch unions before they become big problems, and the cuts are small enough to close quickly.
