A Village With a Town's Footprint

Windsor was a town until voters approved incorporating as a village on November 3, 2015. It kept a town-sized footprint: about 27.56 square miles of land, taking in Lake Windsor, Morrisonville and Token Creek. With about 10,000 residents and roughly 3,480 households spread over all that ground, lots here are often bigger than in Madison's inner suburbs. Tree service in Windsor reflects that. Instead of a single maple over a bungalow, a typical call might involve a whole tree line, a dozen dead ash along a property edge, or a driveway that has to stay open for a fire truck.

How we approach a large property

Walking five acres is different from walking a city lot, so we keep the visit organized: 1. Start at the house. Trees that could hit the home, garage or a play area come first, whatever their condition elsewhere. 2. Follow the driveway. Overhanging limbs, leaning trees and deadwood over the drive are next, since that is your access in an emergency. 3. Walk the lines. Fence rows and windbreaks get a tree-by-tree look for dead ash, split trunks and trees leaning toward a neighbor. 4. Check the outbuildings. Sheds, barns and pole buildings often sit under trees nobody has looked at in years. 5. Agree on the wood. On acreage, many owners want logs left for firewood or brush piled for wildlife; others want everything chipped and hauled. The written estimate follows the same order, so you can choose to do the urgent items now and the rest later.

Neighborhoods with their own character

Lake Windsor, Morrisonville and Token Creek are distinct communities inside one village, and properties range from subdivision lots to open acreage. An older farmstead with big shade trees near the house needs a different plan than a newer lot with young trees that would benefit from structural pruning while they are still small. We plan each visit around what is actually on the property.

People here stay

Census QuickFacts reports that 94.8% of Windsor residents lived in the same house a year earlier, and 75.8% of homes are owner-occupied, with a median owner-occupied value of $425,600. Owners who plan to stay usually want a long-range approach: take care of hazards first, then improve the trees that are worth keeping, and replant where something had to come out.

Ash along the edges

Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in most Wisconsin counties, including Dane County since 2013. On large lots with unmanaged tree lines, dead ash are often the bulk of the work. Dead ash dry out and break unpredictably, so we usually recommend taking them down before they start shedding large limbs, especially near driveways and fences.

Stumps on acreage

Not every stump needs grinding. In a wooded edge, a low-cut stump can be left to rot. In a lawn, field edge you mow, or a spot where you want to build or plant, grinding below grade is worth it. We will quote both options when it makes sense.

Windsor Questions

Can you clear a whole fence line of dead trees on my Windsor property?

Yes. We can remove the dead and dangerous trees, leave healthy ones in place and either chip the brush, pile it, or haul it, depending on what you want.

Do I have to grind every stump?

No. In a wooded area, stumps cut low can be left to break down. Grinding makes sense in lawns, mowed edges, garden areas and anywhere you plan to build or plant.

Can you work in Morrisonville and Token Creek, not just near Lake Windsor?

Yes. We cover the whole village, including Morrisonville, Token Creek and the Lake Windsor area.
