Spring Creek Runs Through Everything in Lodi
Lodi sits in a glaciated valley in Columbia County, and Spring Creek runs right through it, from the Lodi Marsh through downtown and on into Lake Wisconsin. The creek is spring-fed, a brown trout stream, and parts of it stay open even in winter. It is also why the city is here: Isaac Palmer picked the site in 1846 partly for its water power, and a sawmill was running on the creek that same year, followed by a grist mill in 1850. When we provide tree service in Lodi, the creek and the valley sides around it are usually part of the plan.
Three settings, three approaches
Along the creek. Trees near Spring Creek and the marsh grow in soil that stays moist much of the year. They tend to root shallow and lean toward the open water. Removing them means rigging and lowering pieces so nothing ends up in the stream. Where a tree is holding a bank, cutting it back and leaving the roots in place can be the better choice.
On the valley slopes. A glaciated valley means the ground rises on either side of the creek. Hillside yards are where removals get tricky, because a tree dropped downhill can slide or roll well past where it lands. We usually take these down in sections and keep the wood on the slope under control.
In the older blocks. The city has been growing since the 1840s, and older parts of town can have mature trees close to houses, garages and overhead service lines. Clearance pruning and careful sectional removals are the norm.
The 1984 tornado reached Lodi too
The F5 Barneveld tornado of June 8, 1984 is mostly remembered for what it did to Barneveld and Black Earth, but it kept going. In the Lodi area it downed trees, damaged five homes and destroyed sheds and some barns before it dissipated. Storm history is a good reason to look at the big trees around your house now and then, especially ones with cracked forks or large dead limbs.
Trout stream care
Because Spring Creek is a cold, spring-fed trout stream, we are careful about what goes into it. Sawdust, chips and branches should stay out of the water, and we avoid running equipment on soft banks. If you are planning a larger clearing project near the creek, think about leaving shade trees along the bank; cold-water streams depend on them.
Ash and oaks
Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in most Wisconsin counties, and a dead ash is worth taking down before the wood turns brittle. For oaks, the Wisconsin DNR recommends no pruning or wounding from April through July because of oak wilt, and it also warns that the disease can travel in firewood. Keep firewood local.
A small city

Lodi Questions
Can you remove a tree along Spring Creek in Lodi?
Usually, yes. We lower it in sections to land and keep chips and debris out of the stream. If the tree is stabilizing the bank, we may suggest a reduction instead of full removal.
Is a hillside removal more expensive?
Often a bit, because it takes more rigging and time to keep wood from sliding downhill. The written estimate shows the method and price before we start.
Do you work outside the city limits?
Yes. We work on properties around Lodi as well as in town, including rural lots with tree lines and long driveways.
